Q&A with Laura Thomas
1. What was your inspiration for your illustrations?
Our early discussions about the SWIM concept were incredibly exciting, and I felt that my artwork aligned perfectly with the Bambi Mini Co brand. Growing up by the beaches in England and now in Australia has always been a strong influence on my work, along with my passion for visiting exhibitions and galleries whenever I can.
2. What did your creative process look like?
I had so many ideas at first that I had to write everything down. Once I settled on the colours and palette, I started painting. While listening to podcasts and music, I created a broad range of sea life, patterns, shapes, symbols, and phrases. All of this came together to form the 'Under the Sea' concept, complete with various characters and narratives.
3. Three fun facts about you/your brand?
I live in Melbourne now, but I’m originally from Devon, England. I decided to leave my journalism degree behind to pursue Fine Art instead, and I’ve even transformed my garage into my own studio and workspace.
4. Do you have a favourite character from your original illustrations?
My favourite characters are the Stella starfish! I love the little trio. I also think Cedric the Crab is pretty awesome too.
5. Is this your first time illustrating swimwear?
Yes! And super proud to have collaborated with Bambi Mini Co. on this type of project
6. Have you ever worked on a babywear brand? This was my first time designing babywear, and I had so much fun collaborating with Bambi Mini Co. Having the creative freedom to explore was exhilarating and fueled my passion to fully dive into the project.
